Welcome to the 2008 Medill New Media Publishing Project: 'Locative Storytelling'.
Locative storytelling uses emerging mobile and location-based technologies, such as GPS-enabled mobile phones and interactive online maps. It provides multi-media content that enhances a user's connection to a given place.
To demonstrate the potential of locative storytelling, we have created a project that focuses on the Chicago 2016 Olympic bid. This Web site is a companion to the interactive GPS-driven experience that we created using HP's Mediascape authoring platform (check out our downloads page).
With our project, we aimed to connect people to many of the places and spur them to imagine the social, environmental and economic consequences of a Chicago Olympics.
Check out our Olympic venues page, where you will find multimedia content focused on: Douglas Park, which would be the location for the aquatic events; Monroe Harbor and Northerly Island on the lakefront, which would host other water-related events; McCormick Place, the general area planners envision as the future home of the Olympic Village housing complex and Washington Park, which would be home to the nearly $400 million Olympic Stadium.
